View Ages

We have so immersed ourselves in the Information Age that I fear we are losing touch with the very world around us. It feels as if there is a veneer, a facade, covering everything that might be of substance. What do we now perceive of something when we look at it? Are we shown a crude paint job and denied exposure to the deeper reality? Are we aware that a deeper reality may even exist?

When I ponder ages past, the Stone Age or the Ages of metals, Iron or Bronze, and attempt to reconcile these periods of our history to the present day, I cannot help but wonder what images the Information Age will inspire in those that follow us. What shape does information have? What visions will it conjure?

I find myself wondering what our present age truly represents and if we are somehow missing out on something without even realizing it. After all, the astounding quantities of information we are accumulating must describe something. There must be a material reality underneath somewhere.

As an artist, one of the tenets I follow is sympathy for the materials I employ. When I shape something from wood, the wood is as important as the form it takes and is indeed one with it.

What is the material of information? Some would say that is the true beauty of information; it transcends material and therefore any limits that might otherwise be imposed on it. I wonder. As powerful as that concept may be, how far can we advance somthing without a visual representation available to us? When will our ability to imagine future possibilities be narrowed by an inability to comprehend what has been created?

Who will understand what lies beneath the surface that has been rendered for us?
