The New Peer Educator at the Peer Counseling Center
by Harvey Kilmete
Palikir Postscripts would like to welcome Mike Ioanis as the new Peer Educator at the Peer Counseling Center. Mr. Ioanis is a student at C.O. M., where he is working to get his BA degree in the field of Education. Mike likes to help young people at school and in his community. Mr. Ioanis is planning to become a teacher one day . He likes to come up with ideas for young people so that it keeps them too busy for other things like drugs. He is going to be a good leader one day. Mr. Ioanis hopes that his ideas have been a great help for people that are not in school now because it's given them the idea of coming back to school. He knows that using drugs are one reason students drop out of school. Because he knows this , he tries to give them advice that will make them realize that school is the key to having a good life. Mike is very good at giving advice to young people. He hopes that what he is doing now (staying in school and helping youth) will be a strong example, especially for those who are not in school now.
Mike graduated from PATS high school and served two years before coming to continue his education. Mike is trying to help stop the use of the drug some people call weed or joints. He said that since marijuana is becoming popular amongst the students he feels it should be stopped because not only will it ruin the mind but students will become very addicted and it's dangerous. He believes that this problem is not only happening at school but every where on this small island. Now that he's working at the Peer Counseling Center, he will work with the Staff in this program and help the students with their problems. This program is not only helping the students but it is helping C.O.M very much.
We welcome Mike to Peer Counseling and wish him success.
