Extinction of species in Micronesia
by Hector Palemar
Why is it that there are some birds and animals that are dying out? What is causing these species to disappear? Is it the lack of food or is it the people that are killing them? In Guam, in 1979, the mallard (duck) was last seen and then in 1984, a small little bird called the broadbill (also known as a fly catcher) also became extinct. The U.S. Fish and Wild life have removed the two bird species from their federal list of threatened and in danger of extinction species because they are now gone completely. News in Guam is that they are trying to "reestablish other bird species, including the Guam rail and the Mariana's crow.
What are some ways to prevent this from happening if this were to happen in Federated States of Micronesia? What can Micronesians do to save these creatures? One of the major problems that is noticed here in Micronesia is that most people do not care which bird or animal species is in danger of becoming extinct. Micronesian people have this idea that the extinction of animals or bird species are all nature's doing. So if Micronesian people were to save an animal or a bird that is going to die, how would they do it? People in Micronesia need to learn more about the surroundings and creatures that live in them. By doing this, they need to have people who know what to do to save the lives of these species that are in danger of becoming extinct.
When a plant or animal becomes extinct, it will disappear forever and we will never be able to see that it is recovered.
