CHECKING I.D. CARDS IS THE TOPMOST RULE THIS SEMESTER,
by Felix Pelep
This is a new year, and the students, staff and faculty are still trying to enforce the new rules here at the College. Every day the College Security Guards are out on campus checking I.D. cards on every single student. Checking ID's at the College is not new rule but it was just not enforced in the past as the Security Guards are doing now. They, the Security Guards, are now taking this rule seriously and strongly enforcing it. Before, checking ID cards was not enforced anywhere on the College campus but only when using computers in the L.R.C and also when getting refunds and work study paychecks, students needed to show their ID cards before receiving their checks. Everyone is now being urged to have his or her ID card with them while on campus. If a student gets caught while on campus without his or her card they will be reported to the Interim College of Micronesia President and a penalty will be given. Checking ID cards applies to both the staff and the students at the College. Anybody who's not a student or staff at this institution and is interested in visiting the College, will have to have a written form from the President of the College or those in authority to be able to step onto the College campus, and without the identification of any kind or permission from any office will have to turn around and leave. Any high school student who wants to study or do their research in the Library will have to carry their ID card with them or get permission issued by the L.R.C staff if they want to use the library or step onto the campus. Most of the students hate this policy and get annoyed when the Security Guards check their ID cards, but they are doing this because it's part of their job and for the safety of the College community.
Actually, the number of Security Guards that the College of Micronesia employs has increased from the past. During the past, the College had a low number of Security Guards but now they have nine Security Guards and are working 24 hours a week. Each Guard has his own shift, and they are stationed at both girls' and boys' dorms, administration buildings, classroom buildings, and around the library area, up at the Bilingual building and three are located near or beside the roads. Each Guard has to patrol around his area to make sure that everything is in order.
As for the students that are staying in the dorms, they cannot go to the store alone, but have to be escorted by a security guard and the Security Guards limit the number of stores that they have permission to go to. A Guard takes one group and if a one group wants to go to the stores, that group has to wait until the first group is back in the dorm and then the next group can go. Now the stores across the road have stopped selling alcohol to the students and the police are checking too to make sure that students don't still manage to buy liquor from the stores. If a store owner is caught selling alcohol to a student, they will be penalized. Students and staff of the College of Micronesia are not allowed to carry weapons on campus either and during school hours, if a student is found carrying a weapon or a staff is found carrying a weapon, that person will be immediately reported to the Vice-President and penalty will be given. The Security Guards of the College also have the right and authority to arrest anyone who is doing anything they consider dangerous or destructive within and outside of the school area, because they have been sworn in by the Sokehs Municipal Court as Special Officers.
