The COM-FSM 42nd Commencement Over 500 dignitaries, honored guests, parents and families of the graduates, friends, faculty, staff, and students attended the COM-FSM 42nd Commencement Exercise on December 23, 2005, at 9:00 a.m. at the China-FSM Friendly Sport Center. The keynote address was delivered to the graduates by Mr. William N. Kostka, Executive Director of Conservation Society of Pohnpei. Seventy five students from National and Pohnpei Campuses graduated and received their Certificates of Achievement and Degrees. Renovations/Upgrade of Facilities at Chuuk Campus The sealed bid proposals for the renovation/upgrading of facilities at the current site of the Chuuk Campus were opened on December 27, 2005. Five bid proposals were submitted from various construction companies in the States of Chuuk and Pohnpei. The Administration of the College will be finalizing its decision on which construction companies will be awarded the bids on renovations/upgrades of facilities at Chuuk Campus soon. The renovations/upgrades of facilities should begin by January 20, 2006. Five hundred thousand dollars ($500,000) had been set aside for the renovations/upgrade of facilities at the current site. Reasons for Selecting Chuuk High School Site as Permanent Site for Chuuk Campus The Leaders of the College of Micronesia-FSM selected the Chuuk High School Site as the future permanent site for Chuuk Campus because the leadership of the State of Chuuk offered it to the College at no cost. The other States of the FSM like Yap State does not have much public land and yet they provided land for Yap Campus. Kosrae and Pohnpei States also provided lands for campuses in their respective states at no cost to the College. The College also does not have fiscal resources to purchase land for its campus in the State of Chuuk. The future of the College’s accreditation is depended on securing a permanent site for Chuuk Campus and the decision that the College leaders made at its December 5-9, 2005, meeting was a wise one. This was also a long overdue issue. Improving Communication Among and Within Campuses One of the many ways in which the College has implemented at its campuses to improve communication among and within its campuses is on the use of group e-mail addresses for e-mailing corrected and approved minutes of the committee meetings to members. The committee members from the National and State Campuses will then share the minutes with interested administrators, faculty, staff, and students. The committee member from a respective campus may also gather issues and matters relating to functions and responsibilities of their standing committee from administrators, faculty, staff and students and add them to the agenda items for committee meetings. The College has established fifteen (15) standing committees and councils such as Admissions Board, Curriculum Committee, Student Services Committee, Finance Committee, Planning Council, Assessment Committee, Financial Aid Committee, Facilities and Campus Environment Committee that recommend policies and issues to President, Cabinet and BOR for review and action. For example, Curriculum Committee is responsible for recommending issues and policies relating to instructional programs and Finance Committee is responsible for recommending issues and policies relating to fiscal resources. The Committee Chairs are encouraged and reminded to start using the newly established group e-mail addresses for their respective committee to distribute approved minutes to members. Committee members are encouraged to share the minutes of meetings with interested administrators, faculty, staff, and students at their campuses. These goals and statements are the guiding principles on who we are and they also set direction for the College. Mission Statement Historically diverse, uniquely Micronesian and globally connected, the College of Micronesia-FSM is a continuously improving and student centered institute of higher education. The college is committed to assisting in the development of the Federated States of Micronesia by providing academic, career and technical educational opportunities for student learning. Kudos to Mr. Dan Meyer, Music Instructor, and over 60 faculty, staff, and students who participated in the Christmas Choir that entertained about 300 people from the College and community on December 9, 2005, at the practice gym. Kudos to staff (Recreation, Maintenance, and Dorm) and students that participated in the around the island Christmas Caroling on December 16, 2005. Kudos also goes to Faculty/Staff Senate Executive Committee for organizing the Christmas Party for the college community on December 15, 2005, at Nan Tehlik Restaurant.
