The student will be able to:
1.1 Define language and identify its
basic functions.
1.2 Correctly use common linguistic terms in written and oral discourse:
phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics,
language acquisition/learning, dialect, creole, pidgin,
etc.
1.3 Analyze languages, particularly in the areas of sociolinguistics, corpus or
maintenance language planning, and semantics.
1.4 Conduct research on topics in linguistics.
2.1 Present cogent content-based opinions concerning the status of language in
the FSM.
2.2 Describe the interrelationship between and among culture, language, and
change.
2.3 Present arguments concerning the development of language policy in the FSM.
2.4 Write language standardization recommendations for his/her personal mother
tongue (specific Micronesian language).
3.1 Explain the relationships between first and second language skills.
3.2 Describe common language disorders and demonstrate strategies for
accommodating them in the classroom.
3.3 Design lesson plans and course outlines for teaching language in both
language- specific and content-based situations.
