STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES
1. An understanding of the function of
narration.
Since the chief characteristic of

that fictional mind and eye (the narrator's) through which, as readers, we
perceive the details of the story.
2. An ability to interpret stories and identify themes.
Students should be able, after
reading a particular story, to state the basic subject or theme and also to
point out some of the
larger meanings and implications suggested
by that story.
3. An awareness of the importance of the historical context in which the
work was produced.
Students will become aware of how
social and historical forces can shape and alter the meaning of a particular
story. Students
will become aware of the importance and the basic
procedures for researching the cultural context of a work of literature.
