Program Learning Outcomes

 

Upon successful completion of the Early Childhood Education program, student will be able to:

 

1. Demonstrate mastery of the contents of the early childhood education and elementary education curriculum.

2. Demonstrate knowledge of learning theory through planning, teaching and interacting with preschool children.

3. Demonstrate basic knowledge of children’s growth and development.

4. Demonstrate skills in delivery of early childhood school curriculum in the heritage language.

5. Use a variety of teaching strategies to meet the learning needs of the preschool children.

6. Demonstrate communication and interpersonal skills for facilitating the development of children and meeting challenges of working with children with special needs.

7. Demonstrate and use background knowledge in the following areas: learning theories and principles growth and development language development socio-cultural issues motivation legal issues in education natural and physical science

SS/PY 101 General Psychology (3)

Prerequisites: ESL 089

A survey of the concepts, theories and research behind the study of human thought, emotion and behavior.

 

ED/PY 201 Human Growth and Development (3)

Prerequisite: SS/PY 101

Introduces human growth and development with special emphasis on the physical, cognitive, emotional and moral issues related to the practical period through elementary school years. Covers the entire human life cycle from the prenatal period through old age and death.

 

ECE 100 Introduction to Early Childhood Education (3)

Provides foundation and framework of early childhood programs, historical roots, philosophical issues, program models, roles of teachers and other professionals, assessments, curriculum development, and other key issues relating to early childhood education.

 

ECE 101 Curriculum for Early Childhood Education (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Assists care giver in helping children to become independent, creative individuals. It provides the students with the building blocks for designing a comprehensive curriculum that stresses development learning for preschool children. Students learn  the importance of play, the value of behavioral objectives, and understand the need for careful scheduling of activities.

 

ECE 102 Working with Children with Special Needs (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Provides students with knowledge and understanding about children with exceptional speed and the slower ones in the classroom. This course will help students to be sensitive to the needs of both the children with exceptional speed and the slower ones. This course will help students develop teaching strategies for and understand the needs of children with physical, emotional and developmental challenges and other special needs.

 

ECE 110 The Child, Family, and Community (3)

Prerequisites: ECE 100

Stresses the importance of communication between early childhood teacher and the family and community. Communication between teacher and the home and community is an important cornerstone for a child’s progress. Students explore the interrelationship between the family, school, and community.

 

ECE 111 Child Abuse and Neglect (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

The course provides information on reported and unreported cases of abuse and neglect in Micronesia and elsewhere. Provides training for students in identifying, treating and preventing abuse of at-risk children. After completing this course, student will be better prepared to recognize and properly report this tragic problem. Provides students with understanding of the emotional consequences on the child, parent and care giver.

 

ECE 211 Language Development in Young Children (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Develop students competencies needed to plan and implement strategies for teaching language skills to young children. Explore the various stages of language development in young children.

 

ECE 212 Developing Math Skills in Young Children (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

Provides students with teaching strategies for planning and implementing a math curriculum and evaluating the progress of students in the classroom.

 

ECE 213 Infant and Toddler Care (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

The course is designed to teach student how to create a safe, healthy, learning environment that helps infants and toddler increase their physical, intellectual and social qualities. Students will be involved in promoting self-esteem and good communication.

 

ECE 214 Nutrition, Health & Safety (3)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

This course helps student develop and maintain a healthy and accident-free environment. Responsibility for a child does not end with lesson plans and general care.

 

ECE 215 Internship in Early Childhood Education (4)

Prerequisite: ECE 100

This course provides student with supervised work experience in early childhood education facility under the direction of a qualified child care professional. At the end of the course, the student will be able to demonstrate an acceptable level of proficiency as an ECE educator.

 

Humanities Elective (3 credits)

 

AR 101 Introduction to Art (3) or

Introduces the basic techniques, terminology and concept of drawing. Designed to develop drawing skills and knowledge to practice and critique their drawings.

 

MU 101Introduction to Music (3)

A practical music course providing students with an understanding of music fundamentals, basic skills in note reading and instrumental performance.
