ASSOCIATE OF ARTS IN LIBERAL ARTS/MEDIA STUDIES
The media studies program consists of print, radio, photo and video
journalism courses based on the need expressed by the FSM government. Students
who complete the program should be able to conduct interviews/research, have a
good command of all forms of news writing and presentation, determine news
values, understand the practice of journalism within a Micronesian setting,
perform news design and layout, and fit into any media organization setup or
able to further his/her journalism education at other colleges or universities.
Upon successful completion of this degree, students will be able
to:

Recognize and appreciate the role of mass media in communication,
in contemporary society, and in their personal lives.

Demonstrate an ability to practice journalism within a Micronesian
setting.
3.
Plan, produce, and design print, radio, photo, computer and video
media projects.
4.
Students in the Media Studies program must successfully complete a
final practicum project as well as pass all required courses.

MM 101 Introduction to Journalism (3)
Prerequisites: ESL089, ESL099
This course will prepare students to become print journalists. Students
will learn to write factually correct, concise, readable news copy. Students
will also learn to pursue research, to interview people, and to abide by
journalistic ethics.
MM 110 Introduction to Photography and Video (3)
The course will provide students with basic darkroom, digital
photography, and digital video skills. These skills will be taught along with
the history of photography and guidelines for artistic composition.
MM 205 Introduction to Media Studies (3)
Prerequisites: Completion of MM101 with “C” or better, or
permission of instructor.
This course provides an introduction to the field of Media
Studies. Students will learn to read media ‘texts’, analyze images, identify
genres and ideologies, understand media institutions and research contemporary
media topics in a Micronesian context.
MM 220 Advanced Video (3)
Prerequisites: MM110 or permission of instructor.
This course will provide students with skills in the
pre-production, production, and postproduction of video. The student will
write, direct, and edit a video project. There will be an emphasis on narrative
continuity, coherence, audience, style, and purpose.
MM 225 Multimedia Design (3)
Prerequisites: CA 100 or permission of instructor
This course presents essential multimedia design principles,
professional vocabulary and current technology. Students will learn to design
an interactive multimedia educational presentation. Students will also acquire
the foundation of knowledge and skills necessary to continue study toward becoming
a professional multimedia designer.
MM 246 Media Studies Practicum (3)
Prerequisites: Final semester status as a media studies major or
permission of the instructor. Provides media studies majors with an
individually tailored, supervised, hands-on, intensive experience in one or
more media areas. Participants in this capstone course engage in a mentoring
relationship with a faculty member and/or a media professional in the
community.

IS/MM 245 Desktop Publishing (3)
Desktop Publishing is designed to improve
the student’s visual communication skills, increase spatial and aesthetic
perception and discrimination, expand computer skills and technical vocabulary,
and develop effective visual communication strategies. The course will focus on
projects such as newsletters, annual reports, brochures, and promotional
materials as well as on getting the student to utilize other software
capabilities. This is a studio arts course; at least half of the contact hours
will be in the studio lab.
MM 120 Film Studies (3)
This
course presents essential motion picture vocabulary, grammar and
aesthetics. Students will learn to
‘read’ and understand motion pictures, and will be able to communicate that
understanding in writing using the correct technical vocabulary. Students will acquire the foundation of
knowledge necessary to continue study toward creating their own films.
MM 240 Computer Animation (3)
Prerequisites: Any Art class and CA
100 or permission of instructor
Computer animation is designed to
improve students’ visual communication skills, increase temporal, spatial and
esthetic perception and discrimination, expand computer skills and technical
vocabulary, and employ effective visual communication strategies for use across
academic disciplines. This is a studio arts course; at least half of the
contact hours will be in the studio lab.

SS 205 Micronesian Government
and Politics (3)
Prerequisites: SS 150, SS 101
This course deals with the various
forms of governments existing in the Micronesian region and the politics
associated with them. This course will discuss the impact of tradition
vis-à-vis politics and the formal and informal roles of the traditional leaders
in the various governments and the political process.
SS 212 Economy of
Prerequisite: SS 150
An in-depth exploration of the FSM
economy with an emphasis on economic development policy planning.
