VOCATIONAL
MARITIME COURSE DESCRIPTION
Prerequisite: MSG 089 Survival Techniques, MSG 090 Fire Prevention and
Control, and MSG 091 Basic First Aid.
This course has been designed for mariners who wish
to attain competence in using English as a working language on commercial
vessels. This course is suited to any mariner who needs to learn basic maritime
English for the work place. The course aims to provide the learner with the
language and vocabulary skills required to work cohesively as a member of a
ships crew, perform watch keeping duties and operate machinery and equipment as
directed.
MWD 101
Prerequisite: MWD 100 Enabling English
This course provides the student with the knowledge of basic bridge
procedures and skills required to perform the duties of a deck rating forming
part of a navigational watch.
Prerequisite: MWD 100 Enabling English
To provide the learner with
the knowledge and skills in seamanship required to perform duties as a deck
rating forming part of a navigational watch. This course is targeted at mariners who wish to obtain a Certificate of
Competency as Watch keeper Rating Class 1 in accordance with the South Pacific
Maritime Code.
MWD 103 Basic Marine Machinery System
Prerequisite: Elements of Shipboard safety or one year of service in either fishing or merchant marine service.
This course is designed to provide the learner with the knowledge and
skills to safely perform daily duties and form part of an engine room watch.
