MULTI-LANGUAGE COURSE DESCRIPTION
ML100 Introduction to Pohnpeian Language
Prerequisites: Speaker of Pohnpeian
Language
This course is developed mainly for in-service teachers to
help promote and support Pohnpeian not only as a
language of instruction, but also as a subject of elementary classroom learning
(academic pursuit). This course also
compliments the bilingual education modules approved and used in the elementary
school settings. It focuses on the general nature and use of language (developed
in English), the Pohnpeian sound system, the
affixations in Pohnpeian (prefixes, suffixes, and
enclitics) and the functions that each of the affixes serves, types of Pohnpeian sentences and their interpretations, the Pohnpeian counting and numeral systems, the Pohnpeian standard writing system, adverbs in Pohnpeian language, interrogative phrases in the language,
and other elements of grammar.
ML101c Chuukese Reading
Prerequisites: Speaker of Chuukese
Language
This course is designed to provide students with the
ability to read Chuukese with emphasis on academic
reading. Students will be able to read with comprehension and fluency on a
broad range of printed materials appropriate for college level reading and for
a variety of purposes. Students are expected to be able to identify the kinds
of reading materials such as exposition, narration, description and persuasion.
ML101k Kosraean Reading
Prerequisites: Speaker of Kosraean Language
This course is
designed to provide students with the ability to read Kosraean with emphasis on
academic reading. Students will be able to read with comprehension and fluency
on a broad range of printed materials appropriate for college level reading and
for a variety of purposes. Students are expected to be able to identify the
kinds of reading materials such as exposition, narration, description and
persuasion.
ML101p Pohnpeian Reading
Prerequisites: ML 100p Introduction to Pohnpeian
Language
This course is designed to provide students with the
ability to read Pohnpeian with emphasis on academic reading.

This course is designed to provide students with the
ability to read Yapese with emphasis on academic reading. Students will be able
to read with comprehension and fluency on a broad range of printed materials
appropriate for college level reading and for a variety of purposes. Students
are expected to be able to identify the kinds of reading materials such as exposition,
narration, description and persuasion.
Prerequisites: ML101c Chuukese
Reading
The course is designed to provide students with academic
writing skills using the Chuukese language in a wide
range of subjects and topics. The course
aims to introduce the basic understanding of the spelling/writing systems of
the Chuukese orthography, and grammatical aspects of
the language. Moreover, this course will
help students in broadening their skills in developing writing materials for classroom
use.
ML102k Kosraean Writing
Prerequisites: ML 101k
The course is designed to provide students with academic
writing skills using the Kosraean language in a wide range of subjects and
topics. The course aims to introduce the
basic understanding of the standard spelling/writing systems of the Kosraean
orthography, and grammatical aspects of the language. Moreover, this course will help students in
broadening their skills in developing writing materials for classroom use.
ML102p Pohnpeian Writing
Prerequisites: ML 101p Pohnpeian
Reading
The course is designed to provide students with academic
writing skills using the Pohnpeian language in a wide

systems of the Pohnpeian orthography, and grammatical
aspects of the language. Moreover, this
course will help students in broadening their skills in developing writing

ML102y Yapese Writing
Prerequisites: ML 101y Yapese Reading
The course is
designed to provide students with academic writing skills using the Yapese
language in a wide range of subjects and topics. The course aims to introduce the basic
understanding of the standard spelling/writing systems of the Yapese
orthography, and grammatical aspects of the language. Moreover, this course will help students in
broadening their skills in developing writing materials for classroom use.
ML150 Pohnpeian
Prerequisites:
This course will
cover the grammar of the Pohnpeian language. Students
will become familiar with the basic linguistic features of Pohnpeian
language, i.e.: phonological, morphological, and especially the syntactical
features of Pohnpeian.
