UBP-Pohnpei Holds 13th Annual Award Ceremony
Kolonia, Pohnpei (September 25, 2013) – The College of Micronesia-FSM Upward Bound Program-Pohnpei (UBP) held its 13th annual Award Banquet on September 15, 2013, at Jay’s Ocean Side restaurant in Sokehs. Approximately 100 Upward Bound Staff members, Parents, UB Instructors, Alumni, Students and honored guests gathered to witness the Program.
Mrs. Belsihpa Mihkel Isom a UB alumni, now working as a Lawyer at Micronesia Legal Services was the keynote speaker. She challenged the students and gave them inspirational advice to help them through their educational endeavors. College President & CEO Joseph M. Daisy, Ed.D. joined the presentation of awards and personally congratulates all the graduates as they receive their certificate of completion and awards. 24 seniors graduated from their respective high schools were recognized for their academic achievements and all of them are all currently enrolled at COM-FSM.

The following students received special recognition awards:
Yvonne Johnny is the salutatorian at Nanpei Memorial High School, she received the 2013 Student of the Year Award for demonstrating high academic success, great leadership skills and serving as a model to all the students in the program over her years with the Upward Bound Program.
Charlotte Eperiam, also from Nanpei Memorial High School received the Highest Cumulative Award for attaining the highest cumulative grade point average among her class.
Liandra Joseph and Ashly Abraham received the Best Attendance Award for maintaining an outstanding attendance record for the overall years attended in Upward Bound Program and at the target school as well.
The Most Improve Award was presented to Mr. Johnston Hentrick for showing an outstanding commitment to improve his cumulative GPA over his years with the Upward Bound Program.
All graduates receive an award of completion, honor awards and high honor awards.
Upward Bound is a U.S. Department of Education funded program designed to help high school students bridge the gap between secondary school and college and to provide them with financial and academic resources to prepare for postsecondary education. The Upward Bound project, sponsored by College of Micronesia-FSM serves high school students from the three Public High Schools (MHS, NMHS and PICS) in Pohnpei. The program provides high school students with services year-round through its academic and summer bridge components.
The Project Director Mr. Diaz Joseph concluded the program with an annual UBP progress report and followed by a dinner reception hosted by UBP.
