College Saddened by the passing of Dr. Paul Dacanay
Obituary written by Dr. Theresa Koroivulaono to the late Dr. Paul Dacanay
I can do all things through Christ which strengthen me. Philippians 4:13
On behalf of the College of Micronesia-FSM Board of Regents, students, faculty, staff and administrators, I share this message with deep sadness and sorrow.
Dr. Paul Dacanay, a respected and beloved member of the College of Micronesia-FSM community, passed away on Friday morning November 29, 2024 at Genesis Hospital in Pohnpei. He was a dedicated educator, a brilliant scholar, and a kind and compassionate colleague and friend.
Dr. Dacanay's impact on the College of Micronesia-FSM is immeasurable. He inspired countless students, mentored countless faculty and staff, and contributed significantly and immensely to the institution's academic and administrative growth. His passion for teaching and his commitment to student success were evident in everything he did. Even when he returned last week from his medical leave in the Philippines he met straight away with his students; such was the strength of his commitment as a passionate educator.
Dr. Dacanay first joined the College in 2010 as an Instructor in Public Health. Only a year later in 2011 he became the Division Chair for the Public Health Program (a position he held until his sudden passing). In September 2018, Dr. Dacanay was recognized as the Professor in Public Health at COMFSM. He also served in many other capacities including as ‘Academic Coordinator for the POET/DDFT’ programs; Coordinator of the STEP-UP Program under the University of Hawaii; consultant on many public-health projects and has many publications especially about public health issues and programs in the FSM and the Micronesian region.
In May 2012 Dr. Dacanay received the Professional Recognition Award for being promoted as Chair of the Division of Public Health. In his pursuit of professional excellence and continuous improvement, Dr. Dacanay completed the workshop on ‘Effective Performance Evaluation’ for which he was certified in April 2016. His long and dedicated service to COMFSM was recognized in 2016 and 2021.
Beyond his professional accomplishments, Dr. Dacanay was a cherished friend and colleague. His warm smile, infectious laughter, and unwavering support will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He leaves behind a lasting legacy which will be fondly remembered and ‘shoes that will be very difficult to fill’.
Our thoughts and prayers are with Mrs. Dacanay and family during this difficult time. May they find comfort in the memories they shared with him and in the knowledge that he touched the lives of so many at COMFSM, in the FSM and beyond.
May Dr. Paul rest in eternal peace.
