President's Message to the Community

June 2, 2016

COM-FSM Mission Statement:

The College of Micronesia-FSM is a learner-centered institution of higher education that is committed to the success of the Federated States of Micronesia by providing academic, career and technical education programs characterized by continuous improvement and best practices.

Dear Colleagues and Fellow Members of the COM-FSM Community,

The spring semester has ended and the summer session commenced on May 30, 2016. The college registered 809 head counts for summer 2016. The 809 head counts represent 80% of our college-wide summer 2016 target head count of 1,009. The enrollment counts for National, Pohnpei and Yap campuses are not final. National and Pohnpei Campuses are scheduled to hold special registration for incoming new freshman (first-time-in college) students on June 23-24, 2016; while Yap Campus will be scheduling its regular registration for summer 2016 on June 13-14, 2016.

The college is now planning for its 25th Anniversary Celebration, which will take place in Spring 2018. The Executive Director for Institutional Advancement and External Affairs, Mr. Emanuel Mori, will lead the planning committee for the next 2 years to prepare for the college’s 25th Anniversary celebration.

Accreditation:

On May 24, 2016, a COM-FSM Summary Table of Recent Actions and Evidence was submitted to the ACCJC Commission with the assistance of the director of human resources, VPIA and COS that shows the progress of the college’s work towards the Accreditation Standards since the submission of the Supplemental Report on May 12, 2016.

On June 8, 2016, Dr. Waguk, Chairman of the Board of Regents, VPIEQA and I will appear before the ACCJC Commission to report the college’s progress since the team visit. We will be informed by ACCJC in early July regarding the college’s accreditation. The team report and action letter will then be made public.

Upcoming Activity:

On June 5-6, 2016, the Cooperative Research and Extenstion Department will be hosting a Summer Science Fair at the National Campus. Different entities will discuss career opportunities and what they do along with visual displays.

Announcement from Vice President:

Vice President for Cooperative Research and Extension: Dr. Murukesan from Yap CRE represented the college to the International Small Island Studies Association-Islands of the World Conference in Lesvos, Greece (May 23-27, 2016). He presented a paper on Climate Change Adaptation Strategy.

To the faculty and administrative staff, thank you for all of your work, effort and dedication during the 2016 Spring Semester in service to the students we serve. Each of us plays an important role in the successful implementation of the mission of COM-FSM. Together, let us continue to move forward to address the challenges we face and embrace the opportunities that are available.

It is a privilege for me to serve you as president.

Warm regards,

Joseph M. Daisy, EdD
