The State of Pohnpei
is comprised of the island of Pohnpei and nine outlying atolls
scattered over more than a hundred thousand square miles of water.
The island of Pohnpei, sometimes referred to as the "Garden
Island of Micronesia", is the largest in the FSM. It is where
the capital is located, hence the center of the most economic
activities in the FSM. Although the State may be the most potentially
threatened in terms of biodiversity conservation, trends and developments
in the past few years in the area of conservation show promise
of Pohnpei State heading in the right direction of sustainable
development.
