FL-101 Japanese I

Course Description:
Japanese I is the first of a two-course sequence. The first objective of this course is to introduce the principle elements of the basic Japanese pronunciation and writing system; HIRAGANA, and the second objective is to develop the ability to speak simple Japanese sentences in daily life situations and encounters.

• This course also meets PLO #(s) 4.2 and 4.3 of General Education program.

A.  PROGRAM LEARNING OUTCOMES (PLOs): 
 The student will be able to:
1. Enrich and deepen self-knowledge by exploring different academic experiences.
2. Articulate and understand their experiences through effective writing, reading, speaking, and various modes of artistic expression.
3. Demonstrate fundamental knowledge and basic skills appropriate to their personal and?professional goals in their chosen area of specialization.

B.  STUDENT LEARNING OUTCOMES (SLOs)- GENERAL: 
The student will be able to:
1.  Acquire the knowledge and foundation needed for learning the Japanese language. 
2.  Demonstrate the ability to use Japanese greetings, farewells, and expressions commonly    used in everyday life.
3. Demonstrate an understanding of the basics of Romanization and Hiragana writing    system.
4.  Increase intercultural understanding between the students’ own culture as compared to the Japanese culture.

The student will be able to: 

General SLO 1.  Acquire the knowledge and foundation needed for learning the Japanese language.

D.  COURSE CONTENT
1. Vocabulary Building: Names of Objects.
2. Greetings for each time/period; common Japanese expressions
3. Conversation: Initial meeting with other people; Learning about others’ cultures and     differences between Japanese culture and language compared to one’s own culture and language.
4. Common Japanese expressions used in daily life; expressing thoughts/opinions properly    in Japanese.
6. Reading and writing Hiragana.

E.  METHODS OF INSTRUCTION
Lectures with handouts, pattern practice, role-playing, presentations, drills, group work/activities.
